When an MMORPG reaches the end of its operational life (for whatever reason), there are few things that remain following that final day. We have a non-functional client, we have memories, we have whatever screenshots and videos we took, we have the relationships that we established… and we have the music.
Out of all of the artistic endeavors that are poured into the making of an MMO, the soundtrack is the one element that ends up with the longest shelf life. And that means that years — even decades! — later, you can still immerse yourself into the soundscape of your favorite game. It’s a small consolation, but I think it’s welcome nevertheless.
