With Sony deciding not to host an E3 2019 press conference or set up a booth at the event’s show floor, many assume that the rest of the year will be devoid of PS4 exclusives, but that may not be the case In fact, one of the biggest PS4 exclusives left to release before Sony shifts to the PlayStation 5 may hit later this year.

According to noted leaker and industry insider Aokiji (on Resetera), Sony will have a Last of Us Part 2 update for fans before E3. With only about a month between now and when E3 2019 starts on June 11th, that doesn’t give Sony much time to make the announcement, but apparently it is coming

Aokiji’s comments about The Last of Us 2 appeared in a forum thread about the upcoming PS4 exclusive game. Fans were speculating about whether the game might release this year and then, a few weeks ago, the insider chimed in by saying that a 2019 release date for The Last of Us 2 seems likely given that Sony will offer an update before E3. Obviously, Aokiji knows what he is doing by leaving just a small morsel of information, and it was only recently that some started taking notice.

"Considering we’re getting an official TLOU2 update before E3, would be really weird if it wasn’t 2019 now wouldn’t it."

There had been some speculation that Sony might still hold some form of a press conference, similar to a Nintendo Direct, around E3 time, so this could be part of that. The PS4 platform holder has already introduced a Direct-like presentation called State of Play, which offers Sony the opportunity to make announcements without holding major press conferences.

While The Last of Us 2 news is not out of the question for 2019, few expected the game to release this year. Developer Naughty Dog only just started finishing motion capture work on the game, with game director Neil Druckmann tweeting out photos with members of the cast and the final page of the game’s script. Still, Uncharted 4 finished its motion capture work in October of 2015 and then released on May 10, 2016.

The good news is that fans won’t have to wait long to see if the rumor is true, and from there they can make their own presumptions. No matter what year it releases in, though, The Last of Us 2 is guaranteed to be a hot ticket item for PS4 owners and maybe PS5 early adopters.

The Last of Us 2 has no release date.
