EVE Online has banned a CSM member (and real-world politician) over an NDA breach and insider trading

Who wants some EVE Online political drama to cap off the afternoon? CCP Games announced today that it has removed a member of the current Council of Stellar Management, the player-elected body that advises CCP on the game’s development. The studio has accused Brisc Rubal – Brian W. Schoeneman in real life – of “sharing confidential information with a member of his alliance that was later used by another alliance member to conduct illicit in-game transactions.” Consequently, the studio says it’s booted him from the CSM, barred him from future elections, confiscated “all the illicit assets and ISK” related to the incident, and banned all of his accounts.

According to the company, it was the CSM that pointed CCP to the misconduct; the studio has further intimated that it’ll block electronics in future CSM sessions to make NDA breaches and insider trading less tempting.

“This misconduct was brought to us by the CSM themselves as an immediate threat to the integrity of the CSM as an institution. CCP’s stance on this is clear: regardless of the type of information shared, acts like this go against everything that the Council of Stellar Management stands for and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

The player says he doesn’t understand why he was banned and has denied “any wrongdoing.”

Update
Reddit is on fire with memes, naturally, as folks began to realize the player has previously been spotlighted for his public role as a GOP lobbyist in real life. While CCP Games hasn’t issued any additional statements about its actions, the banned player has, including an interview and a lengthy Reddit denial of the accusations during which he claims CCP Games hasn’t responded to his requests for more information about his removal. Perhaps the most interesting thing to come of it is the news that two other players were banned for a year for what seems to be their having benefited from the insider trading knowledge.

Update 04/25/2019
CCP has withdrawn all of the accusations against this player and the other players involved, making heavy apologies and promising to reinstate their accounts.
