In From Software’s new game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players will be challenged at every turn and will need to use every tool possible to defeat enemies big and small. But few tools can beat a little damage upgrade, which all Sekiro players will likely be looking for to increase their attack power.

How to Get a Memory for Attack Power Upgrade

Like with past From Software games, Sekiro doesn’t make it obvious how to upgrade one’s attack power from the start, but what players will need is a memory. Unfortunately, these memory items only come from defeating a boss, so those holding out hope they can increase their damage to help beat a boss are out of luck. Still, it’s possible to try new areas and find a boss that might be a little easier for you in order to get a memory in Sekiro, upgrade your attack power, and then take on a more challenging foe.

Upon beating a boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players will get an item screen that explains they have obtained the memory of that foe. In the description, it will also explicitly state that the item increases their attack power.

With the memory in-hand, head to any sculptor’s idol for saving and select the Enhance Physical Attributes tab from the menu. Choosing to “Confront Memory” may sound like players will need to fight the boss again but all this will do is increase their attack power and upgrade their damage output. Now, on the player stat screen, you should see a higher number next to attack power.

Sekiro Boss Fights are the Key

Keep in mind that not every challenging enemy in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a boss. There are a lot of mini-bosses in the game, like the Chained Ogre players face early on, who pose a challenge but will not reward a memory for an attack power upgrade. Thankfully, these mini-bosses are still valuable, as most of them will drop a prayer bead for upgrading vitality (health) or a gourd seed for adding another “drink” from the healing gourd.

Even with more attack power and damage, Sekiro players will still need to learn the mechanics of the game, which are very different from past From Software games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. In fact, a lot about Sekiro is a departure for the developer, with some even saying this is the hardest From Software game yet. Even so, players can make Sekiro harder with the Bell Demon.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
