Fortnite has been the most popular game in the world for about a year now, and no title has been able to come close to challenging Epic Games' battle royale title. Many gamers thought that Apex Legends, Respawn Entertainment's answer to the battle Royale genre, may have had a chance to dethrone the title given its explosive popularity, but it appears that it hasn't had the effect that many people presumed it had, despite claims that Apex Legends is on track to beat Fortnite.

Speaking in an interview, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, stated that Apex Legends hasn't cut into the Fortnite player base. Rather, Sweeny asserts that Apex Legends has invigorated fans of shooter games who wouldn't be drawn to Fortnite's cartoonish style, allowing the two games to co-exist peacefully. Sweeny went on to compliment Apex Legends, stating that it was "awesome to see other games picking up on battle royale, adding their unique spin, and advancing the state of the industry."

While Apex Legends hasn't had much of an impact on Fortnite's success, another game does dip into the battle royale's player base, according to Sweeney. That game is FIFA, another series with mass-market appeal that's popular in many different parts of the world.

Sweeney also stated that Fortnite would soon cross another major player milestone, as the game is now approaching 250 million players. But while the growth is there, Fortnite revenue declined 48% in January.

It'll be interesting to see how Epic Games handles Fortnite in the future, whose success has allowed it to create a digital PC game store. The company is in a very strong position right now, being able to offer developers a strong revenue split for the games sold on its store, and wooing publishers into exclusivity contracts for some of their big-name titles. Tim Sweeney even threw some shade at Steam recently, meaning gamers may soon find themselves embroiled in a war for their wallets very soon.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, IOS, Android, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
