A few weeks back there was a post on the MMORPG subreddit from a dude who said he actually regretted not playing MMOs more. Specifically, /u/againstperfection said he’d quit MMOs in high school and spent those years working on his real life instead. But now, even as a successful adult, he feels regret because he actually loved his experience and identity as an MMO gamer and has considered picking it back up. There’s a lot to unpack in the discussion, but his sentence “at times like these I truly feel like I’ve gained the world but lost my soul” sums it up.
I’ve never quit gaming for years at a time, so I don’t have regrets exactly like that one. But I do have “he chose… poorly” types of regrets when it comes to MMOs; for example, I’m a little bit envious of people who chose Final Fantasy XIV to be their home game all those many years ago. I definitely chose the wrong core MMOs when it comes to avoiding things that sunset. If you were all-in on XIV, against the odds, then you’re a hardened veteran of one of the best MMORPGs in the business.
