While the first half of 2019 is filled with many high quality AAA titles coming out, the Fall and Holiday seasons, as of this point, look relatively quiet, with not much being revealed in terms of expected game releases. While Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be coming this Fall, and a new Call of Duty game was confirmed via Activision Blizzard's recent earnings call, there are still many questions with what to expect for new game releases during the latter stages of 2019.

Square Enix, however, has given some insight on its plans for the remainder of the year. While the company just released its long in-development Kingdom Hearts 3 in January, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda eluded to a major game release later this year.

While offering little context to the statement, Square Enix's financial reports are predicting a strong third quarter for the company's 2020 fiscal year. Matsuda also stated for everyone to look ahead to E3, which is the most probable time the company would reveal what its plans are for the rest of the year. Given Sony has bowed out of this upcoming E3, this offers other publishers the opportunity for more coverage on upcoming releases.

Now that Kingdom Hearts 3 has been released, two of the biggest titles in production under Square Enix are The Avengers Project, being developed by Crystal Dynamics, and the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was first announced back at E3 2015.

It's unlikely Final Fantasy VII Remake would be ready by the end of the year, given both its development struggles and the admittance of revealing the game too early, according to the game's director, but there may be some surprises. Prior rumors suggested that the game might release in episodic form, so perhaps 2019 will see episode 1 of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The Avengers Project would be the more likely of the two to release, given the lack of any news since it was first revealed over two years ago. Plus, with the slate of Marvel movies releasing in 2019 alone, a push to get the game out this year wouldn't be a bad call either. Given the game will likely launch on multiple platforms, and after seeing the success of Marvel's Spider-Man as an exclusive on PlayStation 4, the highly anticipated Avengers Project would be a great fit to come out this holiday season, should Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix find a way to finish the game by that time.
