With the addition of The Last Word exotic hand cannon to Destiny 2, some fans are having mixed reactions to the gun. While some are absolutely loving it and posting videos and clips of The Last Word dominating in the Crucible, others are complaining that it is unusable due to severe recoil, particularly on consoles or while using a controller on PC.

Putting the theories to the test, some Destiny 2 fans have posted videos showing recoil comparisons, and these videos do reveal an increase to recoil between mouse and keyboard and controller. YouTuber Fallout Plays posted a video showing the difference in recoil between PC and console, which shows that the recoil on consoles while aiming down sights is extremely severe. Compared to aiming down sights on PC with mouse and keyboard, the recoil is drastically more manageable.

Going beyond just a console versus PC test, player HotZin tested the recoil entirely on PC with the two different input methods. His tests show an estimated 50% increase in natural recoil (not trying to correct it) when aiming down sights with The Last Word using a controller as compared to mouse and keyboard. HotZin also busts a common theory propagated by many players that the increased recoil is caused by the lower 30 FPS framerate and smaller field of view found on consoles. After testing those aspects on PC, it appears framerate and field of view have no effect on the recoil.

Stepping back to think about the recoil differences, it's not too hard to understand what is probably the issue, which is not specific to The Last Word but instead a fundamental design choice. It has been long documented and confirmed by Bungie that recoil is handled much differently on PC, with Bungie and Vicarious Visions greatly decreasing recoil across the board to make the game feel better on mouse and keyboard. While unconfirmed at this time, The Last Word may just be a symptom of this rather than having a uniquely severe recoil.

Bungie has yet to comment on the issue or any fixes in the works if any.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
