Obsidian Entertainment has revealed that a new way to play Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is coming on Thursday, January 24th with the next update. Once the patch is deployed, players starting a new PoE2 playthrough will be able to do so using a turn-based combat system. This allows players to choose between turn-based or real-time with pause modes, though the TBS mode will be considered "beta".
Using turn-based mode, players will see turns based on initiative roles and will be able to more closely view mechanics that might be hard to see during real-time mode. In addition, ensuring that characters are correctly positioned will make battles more strategic than ever before.
Game Director Josh Sawyer said:
It's a really, really cool experience. I would encourage you to try it, even if you played through Deadfire, through the whole thing already. Check out turn-based. It really does change how the game plays and feels. A lot.
The two game modes are considered "either or" as there will be no toggling between them. Players will have to choose one or the other at the start of a new game. There will be not way to change once the decision is made and the playthrough has started.
