Dragon Ball Z has been a prominent video game franchise for a while now, crossing multiple genres over the years. Yet despite its modern resurgence with games including Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Legends, the series has been neglecting its RPG roots. Bandai Namco hopes to correct that starting this year, with a new Dragon Ball Z action RPG.

Virtually no information about the new game has been shared beyond the game's existence and that it's an action RPG, which itself isn't particularly enlightening. Nonetheless, the announcement was made in conjunction with Japanese manga magazine V Jump. And while V Jump has made the announcement, it's really much more of a teaser for a broader announcement in the magazine's upcoming monthly issue.

Though V Jump seems to have the exclusive initial reveal of this Dragon Ball Z action RPG, there's much more than that to look forward to. Over the weekend there was a special Dragon Ball livestream event in Bandai teased the reveal of a new game during the Dragon Ball FighterZ Red Bull Final Summoning tournament starting January 26. It's now clear that this game will be this Dragon Ball Z action RPG.

The more disappointing side of today's announcement regards when Dragon Ball fans can expect this action RPG to be fully available. The tweet at hand implies, rather unclearly, that this new Dragon Ball Z action RPG is either just starting development or early on. Bandai Namco's tweet reads:

"In 2019, the project of a New Game focusing on the World of Dragon Ball Z begins!"

While this may simply be a poor translation of V Jump's announcement tweet, it sounds as though this Dragon Ball Z action RPG is years away from completion. Still, if Bandai Namco is so excited to announce the game this early, it must believe it's something special. Or maybe just Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3.

Stay tuned for more information on Dragon Ball Z's upcoming action RPG in days and weeks ahead.
