In October 2017, Visceral Games was shut down by publisher Electronic Arts, which at the time was working on an unannounced single-player Star Wars game. The project was then sent to be worked on at EA Vancouver, with the new team tasked with changing the original vision of the game from its linear, narrative-driven design to instead have a broader, open-world concept. The change in vision, however, has been put to a halt by EA.

According to a report from Kotaku, EA Vancouver's open-world Star Wars game has been cancelled. Before being handed over to EA Vancouver, the project was working under the codename Ragtag at Visceral Games, and was being directed by Amy Henning, who's best known for her work as the former director of Naughty Dog's Uncharted franchise. Since it took over, EA Vancouver had yet to release any sort of marketing in the form of trailers or concept art for the project.

EA's time with the Star Wars video game license hasn't fared well the past few years. While 2015's Star Wars Battlefront sold well, it received heavy criticism by not including any form of single-player. Fast forward to Fall 2017, and Star Wars Battlefront 2 was able to add the highly-request single-player adventure, however the controversy surrounding the multiplayer's predatory loot box system forced EA to remove the ability to spend real world money entirely. The backlash from both fans and critics led to various rumors that Disney was looking to take away EA's license to produce Star Wars games, which will expire in the year 2023.

Before working on the single-player Star Wars game, Visceral Games was best known by many for its work on the Dead Space franchise. Their most recent release before working on codename "Ragtag" however, was Battlefield Hardline, which failed to reach EA's expectations in regards to sales. As for future games from Electronic Arts set in a galaxy far, far away, Respawn Entertainment is currently working on a project of their own titled Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which was announced at E3 last year and is expected to release in Fall 2019.
