Over the past couple of weeks, one of the biggest controversies in the professional Overwatch scene has revolved around a girl named Ellie - who some believe does not exist. Conspiracy theories have argued that Ellie is not a real person, and is in fact a male professional Overwatch player masquerading as a female. And while that has yet to be confirmed, it seems as though there may actually be some truth behind this particular conspiracy theory.

Cloud9 streamer Aspen, best known for her Overwatch streams, recently claimed on a stream that Ellie isn't real. "The whole situation was meant to be in a way like a social experiment. Ellie is actually Punisher and he told me yesterday. So, there you go," Aspen said. Punisher, for the uninitiated, is one individual who was accused of being Ellie in disguise. There was an attempt to dispel these rumors by hosting a livestream where Ellie and Punisher were both present, but some still weren't buying it.

In fact, Atlanta Reigns DPS player Daniel “Dafran” Francesca of the Overwatch League suggested that Ellie was just providing a voice for someone else who was actually playing. Some were skeptical about Dafran's assessment, especially considering his sketchy history as a professional player, but if eSports insider Rod Breslau is to be believed, Dafran was right on the money.

Earlier today, Rod Breslau tweeted a message explaining that Ellie has revealed to her Second Wind teammates that she was not the one actually playing the game. Apparently she is a 17 year old girl and someone else has been at the controls, though the identity of that individual has yet to be confirmed. The running theory is that Ellie is in fact Punisher, but that has yet to be confirmed or denied at the time of this writing. It's also been suggested that multiple people have been playing as Ellie.

To further complicate matters, it appears as though Second Wind had no idea that Ellie wasn't real. Blizzard reportedly held a meeting with Second Wind's players and management earlier today, though details on that meeting have yet to be revealed to the public.

This is an interesting twist in the ongoing saga of pro Overwatch player "Ellie," and it will be interesting to see what happens next. Again, we must stress that there hasn't been an official confirmation that Ellie isn't real, but the most evidence points in that direction. We'll provide more details on the situation once they become available.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
