happy birthday to me

Today we’re finishing off our countdown of Massively OP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of 2018!

Coming in at #1 on our list is…

Classic Guild Wars 1 just got a huge graphics update

This one is weird in the most awesome way imaginable. Years ago ArenaNet basically put classic Guild Wars in a permanent maintenance mode, obviously to focus on Guild Wars 2. The studio deserves much praise for keeping it alive, even if the population is pretty thin these days; it’s one of the greatest MMOs ever made as far as I’m concerned.

But this year, ArenaNet – specifically Bill Freist and Stephen Clarke-Willson – gave it some love, with graphics settings options, better window support, improved anti-aliasing options, and a level of detail toggle that makes the distant world look gorgeous. They even teased a big inventory and color-coded items.

So much for mere maintenance mode! Now, wanna sell us a whole new campaign?

Thanks for playing along with our weird stories countdown, and don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our blooper awards!
