Recently, game industry analyst Michael Pachter has been sharing his opinion on the next-generation video game consoles and what they will potentially bring to the table. In regards to the next Xbox, Pachter believes that it will support 4K, 240 frames per second, and virtual reality. And as it turns out, Pachter is predicting that the upcoming PlayStation 5 will have a lot in common with the next Xbox.

Pachter believes that, like the next Xbox, the PS5 will feature 4K, 240 FPS (it's possible he misspoke and meant support for 240hz monitors and TV sets), and support for PlayStation VR. However, while Pachter seems confident that the next Xbox will consist of two separate consoles - a cheap streaming box and a higher-priced version will all the trimmings - he is unsure if Sony will go the same route.

"Whether Sony does it, I think they will probably have that 4K and 240 FPS device that’ll support PSVR. Whether they have a PlayStation Now device that is streaming only, I don’t know. Maybe there will be two each for PlayStation and Xbox, but I would be surprised if there were more than two, and I’m not sure whether Sony is committed to doing that."

Pachter didn't elaborate on whether or not he thinks the PS5 will support currently existing PlayStation VR hardware, or if a new virtual reality device will be developed instead. While VR has had a somewhat slow start, the medium is starting to come into its own, with the PlayStation VR being especially successful compared to its competition. Considering this, it's possible Sony will continue supporting PlayStation VR in its current state with the PS5 instead of producing brand new hardware.

Meanwhile, these aren't the only predictions Pachter has made about the PS5. In the past, he's said that he expects the PS5 to be less than $500, and he also believes it will have a disc drive. Pachter has also speculated on potential software for the PS5, saying that Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding could very well come to the platform.

Whether or not any of Pachter's predictions about the PS5 or the next-generation of gaming consoles come true remains to be seen. However, there's plenty of evidence that suggests we'll get our first official details about the devices in 2019, so fans should stay tuned.
