The latest entrant to the Far Cry franchise was announced tonight at The Game Awards, and it's blowing up more than just headlines. Far Cry New Dawn will take place 17 years after the events of Far Cry 5, which ended with a global nuclear catastrophe. After a long period of nuclear winter and eventual regrowth, survivors once again inhabit Hope County. Unfortunately for them, a ruthless gang led by a pair of twins have descended upon the region with the intent to take all of its available resources.

Far Cry New Dawn is a post-apocalyptic war between these two factions, and it's a lot more colorful than one would think.

Interested gamers can take a look at the trailer below:

In this post-apocalyptic world, resources are scarce. Players will be able to craft makeshift weapons and vehicles, like the brutal Saw Launcher shown in the trailer above. The game will feature a combination of new and old guns for hire, so players should expect to see franchise staples like Hurk make an appearance amidst a new cast of characters.

Far Cry New Dawn will also introduce expeditions to the franchise, which are a series of closed-world missions that take place outside of Hope County. These expeditions will take place across several iconic locations across the US, like wetlands and canyons. The objective of expeditions is for players to grab a package of valuable materials from the enemy faction and make a hasty escape. Since Prosperity can be upgraded to unlock improved weapons and gear, the valuable materials gained from these expeditions can likely be directly applied to home improvements.

The twin leaders of the Highwaymen gang, Mickey and Lou, mark the first time a Far Cry title has had dual antagonists. The Far Cry franchise has a fantastic track record for their fleshed-out baddies, with the likes of Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min, and Joseph Seed all providing memorable performances in their time. The game also promises that players will form unexpected alliances, prompting speculation that a changed Joseph Seed may actual help the player fend off Mickey and Lou's Highwaymen.

There's evidently a lot to unravel in the radically transformed world of Hope County, but fans will have to wait about two months before getting to do so themselves. Far Cry New Dawn will release on February 15, 2019 for $39.99, and interested gamers can pre-order the title immediately.

It's pretty clear that Ubisoft Montreal has taken a much more colorful approach to a post-apocalyptic setting than the likes of Fallout 76, and many will be wondering if New Dawn will scratch the post-apocalyptic gaming itch in ways Bethesda's latest title failed to do.

Far Cry New Dawn is available for pre-orders now, and will release on February 15, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
