Digital CCGs are all the rage these days, from digital-only titles like Blizzard’s Hearthstone and Dire Wolf Digital’s Eternal to adaptations of physical games like Magic: The Gathering Arena, and now there’s a new kid on the block: Mythgard, from Rhino Games. Founded two years ago by Peter Hu, former Blizzard dev and co-founder of Runic Games, and Gazillion’s Paxton Mason, Rhino Games is a small, nine-person studio that has been working tirelessly (and, until now, quietly) on Mythgard, an urban-fantasy themed CCG designed “intentionally for seamless cross-platform play.”

In addition to traditional head-to-head multiplayer games, Mythgard will also feature a single-player story campaign as well as a relatively uncommon (for CCGs, anyway) 2v2 multiplayer mode. The press release also touts the game’s “unique resource and combat systems,” which implements a card-burn mana system as well as a lane system that puts emphasis on creature positioning.

In regard to why the studio decided to create a new CCG as its first title, Hu says, “the genre is still relatively new, and there’s a lot of game design space yet to be explored,” continuing, “We believe that Mythgard’s innovations on the form will stand out in people’s minds for a long time to come.” Mythgard is still in development, but it plans to release on Steam, Google Play, and the iOS App Store, with an “exclusive closed beta” slated for January 2019.
