New World has indeed started its alpha testing with a small group of players

It looks like a rather familiar world.

Last week it was clear that New World had started sending its alpha invites, but there was not yet an actual alpha to test. Just invitations. But the official Twitter has confirmed that the title has indeed begun testing by inviting a very small group of testers at random. The “random” part is important, obviously; it’s all down to chance whether you get invited or not.

For the people not invited to testing (i.e., the majority), the twitter account also posted some new screenshots, including a nice slice of ambient noise and lighting as the game moved through its day and night cycle. Considering how much of this is environmental and not mechanical, it can be assumed that much of the actual mechanical side is still very early, so if you weren’t invited you can console yourself with that. There are also some grapes you can’t eat, but they were probably sour.
