New World rebuilds civilization with the help of player quests and scaling tech

Hungry for more information about Amazon’s New World past a fairly obscure website’s advance preview of the game? You can head over to PC Gamer, where that publication has put out its hands-on impressions of the upcoming PvP MMORPG.

The author reports that the game “feels like part MMO, part survival game.” The latter comes into play through harvesting, crafting, and fort creation. But here’s an interesting twist that brings the worlds of MMOs and survival sandboxes together: New World is going to have some sort of player-created quest system (which sounds a bit like posting an order for certain resources that others can fulfill).

Amazon wanted to focus more on the creation of budding outposts: “We thought, this technology gives us the ability to look at how big a society can grow, and what happens when civilization’s working. We’re looking forward to seeing how players organize themselves in that context.”

It sounds like the more supernatural elements of this game will be coming out mostly at night, which will give players a good reason to hole up or band together for safety. Amazon is touting a massive landmass which it can scale up for demand (populations of 500 and 10,000 were mentioned). Part of this scaling is thanks to the use of Amazon’s cloud technology that was created specifically for New World.
