Shadow Of The Tomb Raider Xbox One X Enhancements Clarified

by Imran Khan on May 03, 2018 at 07:36 PM

In an interview with EPN TV, Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi stated that the Xbox One X version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider would run at "4K and 60FPS" on Xbox One X, which would be a massive accomplishment that very few games of that level of fidelity hit on consoles. Turns out, he misspoke.

The studio sent a statement to Windows Central clarifying what Anfossi meant.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will not run 60 FPS while in 4K. To allow for a more customized gameplay experience, the game will include two visual modes: '4K Resolution' which runs in 4K resolution at 30 FPS, and 'High Resolution' which is targeting 1080p at 60 FPS. Both modes will feature a wide variety of additional enhancements such as HDR, improved physically-based rendering, hardware tessellation, anisotropic filtering, additional dynamic foliage, and more.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is scheduled for a September 14 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can listen to Elise talk about her time playing the game on the latest GI Show or read six things she learned playing the title here.

Our Take
Lots of games lately are offering the option between framerate and resolution, so I am not at all surprised Tomb Raider is also making that split. I wonder if next-gen will be targeting 4K/60FPS from the getgo or developers will always opt for more effects instead.
