Dota 2's International Tournament Sets New Esports Record

by Jared Koncsol on Jul 12, 2017 at 04:30 PM

The seventh annual International Dota 2 Championship has already surpassed last year's record-breaking esports prize pot of $20,770,460. Teams are being continuously added to the Battle Pass compendium, meaning that the pot will continue to grow for the next few weeks. The prize pool tends to surge whenever one of the Immortal Treasures is released, and with one more treasure to go, we can expect another spike in the prize pool in the next few weeks.

The tournament, hosted by Valve, will take place once again in Seattle's KeyArena this year and runs from August 7-12.

Check out more about this year's International here, and get up to date with the compendium here.

Our Take
In 2011, when The International debuted for the first time in Cologne, Germany, the prize pot was a measly $1.6 million. The substantial growth in winnings is a testament to how much traction esports have gained in such a short span of time. Not gonna lie, that number is making me reevaluate my career trajectory.
