God Of War 3 Director Stig Asmussen Leading Star Wars Game At Respawn

by Mike Futter on May 04, 2016 at 06:37 AM

EA isn’t letting any opportunity slip away with regard to its Star Wars license. Star Wars Battlefront out (and getting DLC support), Visceral’s Star Wars project led by Amy Hennig is lingering in the shadows, and now Respawn is working on the franchise in partnership with EA.

In a joint announcement today, EA revealed that Respawn is working on a third-person action game set in the Star Wars universe. The game is being led by God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen, who joined Respawn in 2014.

“Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Vince Zampella and his group,” writes EA studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund. “Their obsession with making games that feel amazing has helped make Titanfall one of the most successful new game launches of this generation. And now, with a new team led by Stig Asmussen, we get to see what they can do when you combine that great attention to gameplay with the power of Star Wars.”

Asmussen wrote on Respawn’s website that the company “erupted in cheers” when the project was announced. And while Asmussen admits that the details are sparse, he makes a commitment to fans about how he and his team will take care of the license.

“We promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honored as a central game design tenet,” he writes. “Fans should expect the exemplary level of quality first established at Respawn with Titanfall, a game that epitomizes our studio’s dedication to slick, larger-than-life action and fun, groundbreaking mechanics.”

No setting or characters have been revealed at this time. A small group is in place at this point, but Respawn is hiring to grow the team.

Respawn is also working on Titanfall 2, which EA says will be out in the current fiscal year (ending on March 31, 2017).

Our Take
Since his hiring in 2014, we’ve been curious about what Asmussen has been working on. This news brings so many questions, and reminds us that we still don’t know much about what Visceral is working on. For now though, a Star Wars game led by God of War 3’s director sounds like a darn good start to Respawn’s work in that universe.
