Dead Island 2 Now Under Development At Sonic Racing Studio Sumo Digital

by Mike Futter on Mar 10, 2016 at 01:48 AM

Sumo Digital has been handed the keys to the Dead Island kingdom. Deep Silver revealed today that after its falling out with Yager, the first developer on the game, it has finally found someone to see the project through.

Sumo’s past projects include Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, Little Big Planet 3, Disney Infinity 3.0, and Forza Horizon 2’s Fast and the Furious spinoff. The original Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide were developed by Dying Light studio Techland.

Deep Silver has been in flux after its meteoric rise on the back of IP’s acquired from THQ’s bankruptcy. The publisher picked up the Saints Row franchise, 4A Games’ Metro titles, and agreed to publish Crytek's Homefront (which also had its own problems).

It’s been quiet on the Saints Row front since the release of Gat out of Hell, Metro games saw current-gen upgrades, and Homefront: The Revolution (now fully owned by Deep Silver and under development at the publisher's new Dambuster studio) is due out on May 17. No details about when we might expect Dead Island 2 have been revealed yet.

Our Take
Deep Silver hit a rough patch as Crytek ran into problems delaying Homefront and the Yager relationship deteriorated. Hopefully 2016 sees the publisher back on track.
