Samsung's Gear VR Is Out Now For $99

by Ben Reeves on Nov 20, 2015 at 12:01 PM

The future of VR is here, and you don’t have to wait until next year for releases of Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and HTC Vive to try it out. Commercial VR is available today thanks to Samsung's Gear VR.

2016 may be the year where VR really comes out swinging, but if you want an early taste, Oculus has teamed up with Samsung to release the Gear VR, a portable VR headset powered by Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

If you already have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, or Galaxy S6 Edge+, then upgrading to VR is as cheap as $99. We've had a few of these headsets floating around the Game Informer offices for a while now, and the general consensus is positive. You do need one of the above phones for the headset to work, but it's a fun little system with some cool VR games that also doubles as a portable movie theater.
